The most common questions about Christian Union. If yours is not here, we are one email away.
Getting started
Who can join Christian Union?
Christian Union is for single UK Christians aged 21 and over who are genuinely seeking marriage. You must be legally single. If you are divorced, your divorce must be finalised before you join.
Do I need to be from a specific denomination?
No. Christian Union welcomes members from across the Christian tradition. Your denomination is shown on your profile. People can choose to search within their tradition. We ask you to respect that others may be on a different part of their journey.
What if I am still working out my faith?
One of the profile prompts asks where you are with God right now. There are eight honest options, including choices for people who believe but are not currently practising or who are working things out outside of a church community. You do not need to have everything resolved to be here. You do need to be honest about where you are.
How does Christian Union differ from other dating apps?
No swiping. No algorithm deciding who you see based on who paid more. Full profiles with voice notes before you send a message. Phase-based conversations that grow in stages. One price. The same for everyone. We have tried to remove every incentive that keeps people single and every feature that turns a person into a product.
Verification
Is identity verification mandatory?
Yes. Every member completes a live selfie check before they can interact with anyone. Unverified profiles cannot send or receive connection requests. This is a condition of joining, not an optional step.
What does verification involve?
We ask you to complete a short liveness check using your device camera. This confirms you are a real person and that your profile photos are genuine. The check runs via AWS Rekognition. Your selfie is stored privately and is never shown to other members.
Is my biometric data stored permanently?
For members in good standing, raw biometric data is deleted immediately after the identity check. For accounts permanently removed for serious violations, a one-way mathematical signature is retained for seven years to prevent the same person from rejoining under a different name. This signature cannot be used to reconstruct your image.
What happens if verification fails?
If the liveness check cannot confirm that you are a real person matching your profile photos, your account enters a pending review state. Write to safety@christianunion.co.uk and we will review manually.
Connections and conversations
How do I connect with someone?
When you find a profile that moves you, you write them a message. The opening message must be 100 to 300 characters and tied to something specific in their profile. If they accept, you enter the Ice Breaking phase together.
What is the difference between Ice Breaking and Established?
Ice Breaking is where a connection begins. You can send messages and start building something real. Once both sides have had a substantial conversation, the connection moves to Established. Established conversations feel different: the header changes and a Conversation Guide opens to help you think about where things are going.
How many connections can I hold at once?
You can hold up to six Ice Breaking conversations and five Established connections at any time. This is a deliberate cap. We do not want Christian Union to become a place where people collect matches rather than build something real. You can reach out to new people as existing conversations naturally come to a close.
What is the Conversation Guide?
The Conversation Guide is an in-app tool that opens once a conversation reaches a certain depth. It offers phase-appropriate suggestions and prompts: questions worth exploring in Ice Breaking, how to go deeper in Established, and things to consider when you are thinking about meeting in person.
Can I see who has viewed my profile?
No. There is no profile view tracking. If you see someone in the feed, they can also see you. But neither of you knows the other has seen your profile unless one of you reaches out.
Subscription and billing
How much does Christian Union cost?
£4.99 per month. One price. The same for every member. There are no tiers, no boosts, no coins, and no paid features beyond the subscription itself. You cannot pay to appear first or to increase your visibility.
Is there a free tier?
Free accounts can hold one accepted connection at a time. A subscription gives you access to the full platform: up to six Ice Breaking conversations and five Established connections simultaneously.
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are managed through the platform where you purchased. On iPhone, go to Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open Google Play and go to Subscriptions. Cancel there. You retain access until the end of your current billing period.
Will the price change?
We may update pricing over time. For any price change, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice via in-app notification or email before it takes effect. You can cancel before a price change applies.
What happens to my profile if I cancel?
Your profile stays active until the end of your billing period. After that, your account moves to the free tier. Existing connections remain visible. You can continue conversations already in progress. Accepting new connections beyond the free tier limit requires a subscription.
Auto-pause and inactivity
What is auto-pause?
If your profile is inactive for more than seven days, it is automatically paused. Your profile becomes invisible to other members. Your existing connections remain in place. This is designed to protect the community from ghost accounts and to respect the time of people looking for something real.
What happens to my subscription when my profile is paused?
If the system auto-pauses your profile due to inactivity, your subscription is cancelled at that point. You retain access until the end of your current billing period. We credit you with a pro-rata extension equal to the unused days. When you return and re-subscribe, that credit applies. No cash refund is issued.
Can I pause my own profile?
Yes. You can pause your profile from the Settings screen at any time. A manual pause also cancels your subscription. You retain access until the end of your billing period. No pro-rata credit is given for a user-initiated pause.
What happens if my account is paused for a long time?
Profiles that remain paused and inactive for 24 months are permanently deleted. We will notify you by email 30 days before deletion takes place so you have the opportunity to return.
Safety and reporting
How do I report someone?
You can report from a profile card in the discover feed, from inside a conversation, or from your connections list. Tap the flag icon, choose a reason, and add a short description. The moment you submit, both parties are removed from each other’s view and the last 30 messages are preserved as evidence.
What happens after I report someone?
Every report is reviewed by a human. Depending on what we find, we either close the report, issue a warning to the reported member, or permanently remove their account. We do not disclose the outcome to either party.
Can someone come back after being banned?
No. When an account is permanently removed, a one-way mathematical signature is retained for seven years. This prevents the same person from rejoining under a new name. It cannot be used to reconstruct their image.
What if I cannot report from inside the app?
If you have been blocked before you could report, write to safety@christianunion.co.uk with as much detail as possible. We will investigate.
Can I appeal a removal decision?
Yes. Write to safety@christianunion.co.uk from the email address associated with your account. Tell us what happened and why you believe the decision should be reconsidered. Our decision on appeal is final. We do not reinstate accounts removed for sexual content, harassment, impersonation, hate speech, romance scams, or criminal conduct.
Your account and data
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings inside the app and select Delete account. This permanently removes your profile and all associated data within 30 days, subject to retention requirements set out in our Privacy Policy (such as safety-related data).
How do I request a copy of my data?
Write to privacy@christianunion.co.uk with your request. We will respond within one month. If your request is complex we may take up to three months and will tell you if that is the case.
Who can I contact about a privacy concern?
Write to privacy@christianunion.co.uk. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk if you believe we are not handling your data lawfully.
